Washer showing a door or lid lock error?

The washer may be unable to confirm that the door or lid is closed and locked. Never bypass a lock or force the door open.

Safe first checks

1. Remove laundry caught in the door or lid opening.
2. Close the door or lid firmly without slamming it.
3. Inspect the visible latch area for detergent residue or a foreign object.
4. Wait a few minutes after unplugging, then follow the manual's restart guidance.

When to stop

Call a technician if the latch is damaged, the door will not release after water has drained, or the code returns repeatedly.

Water, heat, and movement come first

A door can remain locked because the washer senses water, a hot cycle, or drum movement. Look through the glass and use the controls; do not pull the handle to “test” it. If water remains, follow the drain route first. If the cycle was hot, allow the normal cool-down described by the manual. These conditions are different from a latch that cannot confirm an empty, cool, stopped drum.

What service needs to know

Record the full code, model number, cycle, water level, and whether the latch was loose or the door could not align. A photo of the display and a note of when the code returned is safer and more useful than bypassing the lock or removing a panel.

Remove pressure; never force the latch

When the drum has stopped, a bulky load can press against a door or lid and prevent a clean closure. Follow the model's normal pause procedure, redistribute the load if the door unlocks normally, and retry once. A handle that needs force, a damaged strike, or a lock that repeatedly clicks without starting is not a load-balancing task.

Different routes for water versus no water

A locked door with water still inside usually needs the drain route first; a locked door with smoke, heat, or an electrical smell is a stop use situation. Do not use emergency-release instructions from a different model and do not defeat a lock switch. The model manual and the condition around the washer decide the safe next action.

Common questions

Can I unplug the washer to unlock the door?

Only when the area is dry and the manual permits a normal restart. Removing power does not make trapped water, heat, or a moving drum safe. Wait for the appliance to stop, then use the exact model instructions rather than a release method from another washer.

Why does the lock click but not release?

A repeating click can be a lock, drain, or model-specific control issue. Do not force the handle. Record whether the drum is empty and cool, whether a code remains, and what the last cycle action was.
