DOOR OR LID STAYS LOCKED

Washer door won’t unlock? Pause, wait for the lock, and don’t force it.

Check these in order

1. Pause or cancel, then listen for the click. Whirlpool front-loaders: with the Add a Garment light off, press Pause/Cancel twice and wait up to five minutes. GE: press START/PAUSE once; it takes a few seconds for the door to unlock. Samsung: touch Start/Pause; if you paused after water was supplied, the door cannot open for one minute.
2. Check for a lock setting. Samsung says Child Lock on some models locks the door. Whirlpool says that on models with Fresh Hold the door stays locked until you press Cancel, which is normal.
3. Confirm the cycle really ended. Samsung: the timer has expired and the water has drained, and the door lock light is off. Top-loaders that lost power mid-cycle can take up to five minutes to unlock or resume.
4. Check the drain hose if the pump runs constantly. Whirlpool says a hose more than 4.5 in into the standpipe can keep the pump running.
5. New or just-moved washer? Whirlpool says a new washer may arrive with the door locked because of shipping movement. If the washer was powered on before water was connected (F8 E1 or Lo FL), the door locks and the control does not respond while it runs an 8 to 10 minute drain routine; wait about 10 minutes.
6. Reset the power. For a door that will not unlock at the end of a wash, Whirlpool says to unplug or disconnect power, wait about 2 minutes for the control to reset, reconnect, then run a Drain and Spin cycle. Its general reset page uses 5 minutes.
7. Top-loaders: check the lid lock. Whirlpool’s HE top-load page says a lit console light means the lid is locked and, after Pause, the lock stays engaged until the basket stops completely. If the lid will not lock or unlock, close it, wait for the tub to stop, and clean the contact area of lint and detergent build-up with a damp cloth. The washer drains after 10 minutes if the lid stays open.

Samsung front-loaders: the emergency drain hose

Samsung says the door of a front-loader locks while water is detected inside. Near the pump filter there is an emergency drain hose on most models (some older front-loaders have neither). Once water stops coming out of that hose, turn the washer off and on, and the door should unlock. Samsung also warns that water can be very hot after a hot cycle; allow about an hour to cool first.

If it comes back

If the door stays locked after the power reset and a Drain and Spin cycle, the makers send you to service. Neither Whirlpool’s door pages nor GE’s describe forcing or bypassing the latch. Tell service:

• The brand, model number (where to find it) and any code, such as LG dE, Samsung dC / dE or Whirlpool F5 E2.
• Whether there is water in the drum and what the cycle was doing when it stopped.
• That you paused, waited, and reset the power.
