Why does my washing machine smell bad?

A musty washer smell usually comes from trapped moisture, detergent buildup, or a drainage issue. The goal is to remove the buildup and then keep the washer dry between uses.

1. Remove moisture and residue

Wipe the door gasket, drum edge, and detergent drawer after use. Run the approved cleaning cycle. In many cases, this removes the film that feeds mildew.

2. Use less detergent if you see suds

Excess detergent does not make clothes cleaner. It can leave a sticky layer inside the machine, especially in high-efficiency washers. Follow the detergent label and adjust downward if you see lingering foam.

3. Consider a drainage problem

If the odor is strongest near the lower front, drain hose, or standpipe, check for slow draining or standing water. A recurring sewer-like smell may need a plumber or appliance technician.

4. Prevent the smell from returning

Leave the door or lid slightly open after laundry, remove wet clothes promptly, and clean the washer regularly. These small habits matter more than a one-time deep clean.
