Why is my washing machine leaving stains on clothes?

New marks after washing can come from detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, an unclean drum, or a separate laundry issue. Keep one affected item to compare after changes.

1. Use less detergent

Too much detergent can leave a film on fabric, especially in high-efficiency machines. Measure it rather than pouring by eye and use the correct product for your washer.

2. Clean the washer

Run the manufacturer-approved cleaning cycle, then wipe the detergent drawer and door gasket. Residue in these areas can transfer back onto laundry.

3. Separate the source

Check pockets for lip balm, pens, cosmetics, or oily items. Treat a stain according to the garment label before drying; heat can set many stains.

When to call for service

Seek service if marks look like dark grease and return after cleaning, or if you see oil, rust, or water leaking from the washer.
