MARKS AFTER THE WASH
Washer leaving stains on clothes? Identify the type of mark first.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Samsung says that in most cases stains were not caused by the washer, and LG says the same of greasy marks that were already on the fabric. The usual suspects are fabric softener poured on clothes or used in excess, detergent that did not dissolve, oils on the fabric, rust from the water supply and clothes left damp. A test with an empty cycle shows whether the washer is the source.

Check these in order
- Check pockets first. Samsung lists pens, markers, crayons and other dye sources left in pockets.
- Look at the type of mark. Use the table below: oily spots, white streaks, rust or dark spots each have a different cause and fix.
- Check softener and detergent amounts. Do not exceed the MAX line, and measure for the load (Samsung). Dilute softener and add it only in the rinse (Whirlpool).
- Clean the washer and the dispenser. Whirlpool says to clean the washer at least once a month, more often with hard water. Samsung says to keep the washer clean, especially the detergent drawer.
- Run the empty-cycle test if residue persists. Samsung: disconnect the water supply hose, run water into a bucket and look for residue; if the supply has residue, contact a plumber. Otherwise run an empty cycle with no detergent or additives. If residue appears, run two more empty cycles. If it is still there after the third, request service. If residue shows only with normal laundry, the cause is the additives or the laundry.
- Handle torn or damaged clothes. Samsung says to inspect the tub and gasket for jagged edges, and notes that silk, lace and chiffon can be damaged by high-speed spinning.
What each kind of mark usually means

If it comes back
If an empty cycle with no detergent or additives still leaves residue after three runs, or the drum itself is rusty, contact the maker. Tell them:
- The brand, model number (where to find it) and the washer’s age.
- What the mark looks like, and whether it shows on every load or only with certain items or additives.
- The result of the empty-cycle test and whether the water supply has residue in a bucket.
