A burning smell from your washer is not a “run it once more” problem.
Heat, electricity, friction, and a slipping drive component can all smell different — but none are safely diagnosed by repeating the cycle. Start by protecting people and the room, then record the useful clues.
Do not touch the plug if the area is wet or the outlet is hot.
Record when it happened: filling, agitating, draining, or spinning.
Manufacturers may note brief first-use odors, but heat or smoke still means stop.
Make the area safe first
Turn the machine off at its controls. If the floor, outlet, and your hands are dry, disconnect power. Ventilate the room without leaning over the appliance. If the washer is hot, leave it alone until it cools; opening panels or reaching behind it can turn a warning sign into an injury.
What to notice — without taking it apart
Note whether the smell began during spin, whether the drum made a grinding or squealing sound, and whether the laundry or rear of the cabinet felt unusually hot. A photo of any display code and a short video of the sound before you stopped can help service identify the system involved. Do not run another cycle to capture better evidence.
Why the smell matters
Electrical insulation, a drive belt, a motor, a pump, or a foreign object rubbing the drum can each create heat. The same smell does not identify the failed part reliably, and an internet part list cannot make a live appliance safe. The useful decision is whether the washer can remain off until a qualified person checks it: in this case, yes.
When to call urgently
Arrange qualified service promptly when there is smoke, a burnt-plastic odor, a hot plug or outlet, visible damage, recurring breaker trips, or a smell that returns. If the odor came with a leak near power, treat both as an electrical-risk situation.
