How to clean a washing machine without making a bigger mess.

A regular cleaning routine helps remove detergent residue and trapped moisture. Use products approved for your washer and never mix cleaning chemicals.

1. Run the washer-clean cycle

If your model has a dedicated Tub Clean or Clean Washer cycle, use it as directed. Otherwise, choose the hottest empty cycle your manufacturer permits and use a washer cleaner approved for the appliance.

2. Wipe the door seal and detergent drawer

For a front-load washer, gently pull back the visible folds of the gasket and remove lint or moisture with a soft cloth. Remove the detergent drawer only if the manual says it is designed to come out, then rinse and dry it.

3. Check the filter area

Some washers have a drain-pump filter. Follow your manual exactly, place towels and a shallow pan underneath, and expect a small amount of water. Do not force any panel or cap.

4. Leave the door or lid open afterward

Allowing air to circulate after a cycle is one of the simplest ways to reduce mildew odor. Wipe excess moisture around the seal before you close the door again.
