Why is my washing machine so noisy?

A little hum and water movement are normal. New grinding, banging, scraping, or high-pitched noise is not — especially if it is getting worse.

1. Identify when the noise happens

Noise during filling can point to water flow. Noise during draining may come from the pump area. A loud roar, knock, or scrape during spin needs more attention because the drum is moving at speed.

2. Check the load and loose items

Pause the cycle only after the drum stops. Redistribute heavy items and look for coins, bra wires, or other objects in pockets. One bulky item can make an otherwise healthy washer bang during spin.

3. Confirm the washer is level

All feet should touch a solid floor. A rocking washer amplifies normal movement and can create repeated knocking.

When to call for service

Arrange service for persistent grinding, a drum that feels loose, repeated loud spin noise with balanced loads, or a noise that appeared after a leak or impact.
