THE SHORT ANSWER
GE’s Consumer Help Indicator page for 2017-and-newer electronic-control washers does not list an E1 code. It lists five messages: H2O SUPPLY / IE, CAnCELEd, dE, UE and FE. Read your display again and match it to the table below. For a code that is not on GE’s list, the owner’s manual for your exact model is the reference, and WasherPilot does not guess a meaning for it.

What GE documents
GE’s page lists five Consumer Help Indicator messages and says that messages may vary by model. E1 is not among the messages on that page, and the GE front-load troubleshooting pages we checked do not list it either. This does not prove that no GE washer ever shows E1; it means GE does not publish a meaning on the pages we could verify, so we do not invent one.

How it appears: E1 (the letter E and the digit 1), if that is what your display shows.
What to do, in order
- Read the exact characters. Photograph the display and check whether it really reads E1, or whether it is one of the messages in the table, such as H2O SUPPLY, IE, dE, UE or FE.
- Find your exact model number and manual. GE says messages may vary by model, so the manual for your model is the only reliable place to look up a code that is not on GE’s list. Here is where to find the model number.
- Stop for any safety sign. Smoke, a burning smell, sparking, a leak or water near electricity means unplug the washer if the outlet is dry and call service, whatever the display says.
If it is E1 and the manual does not explain it
Contact GE Appliances service and give them everything in one go:
- The model number (where to find it).
- The exact text on the display, ideally a photo.
- What the washer was doing when it appeared (filling, washing, draining, spinning) and whether it is a front-load or a top-load washer.
- What you have already checked.
