GE UE message: the laundry load is unbalanced.
IMMEDIATE ACTION
Spread the laundry evenly
Next stepMake sure the washer is level
Shaking hard or walking: stop the cycle
THE SHORT ANSWER
GE says UE indicates the laundry load is unbalanced. Once the washer has stopped, spread the laundry evenly in the basket and make sure the washer is level. If the washer is also shaking or walking, GE’s shaking page adds checks for the pump filter, the shipping bolts and braces, and the legs.
Based on GE Appliances’ Consumer Help Indicator and front-load shaking support pages, checked October 10, 2026.
What UE means
UE is one of five messages on GE’s Consumer Help Indicator page for 2017-and-newer electronic-control washers. GE says it indicates the laundry load is unbalanced, and gives two actions: redistribute the laundry evenly in the basket, and make sure the washer is level. The page does not say whether UE is front-load only or both. GE notes that messages may vary by model, so your owner’s manual is the reference for your exact washer.
How it appears: UE on the display. A blinking Spin or Spin & Rinse light is a different, milder signal (table below).
Fix it in four steps
- Spread the laundry evenly. Pause the cycle, open the door or lid once the washer has stopped, and redistribute the laundry by hand so it is not piled on one side.
- Check that the washer is level. GE’s front-load page says to check it side to side and front to back on a firm floor, and to adjust the rubber legs until all of them touch the floor and are locked. Keep the legs as short as possible, because longer legs increase shaking, especially during spin.
- Look for other causes of shaking. GE’s front-load page also lists a clogged drain pump filter (if your model has a front access door at the bottom, the manual shows how to clean it) and shipping bolts or braces still fitted. To check, open the door and press on the drum: if it will not move, the bolts or braces are probably still in.
- Test with no load. GE suggests running a rinse and spin with nothing in the washer. If it vibrates normally, the load was the cause. GE says some movement during an imbalance is normal, up to about 1/4 inch (6 mm).
If UE keeps coming back
GE’s shaking page says to schedule a repair appointment if these steps do not fix the problem. Tell them:
- The model number (where to find it).
- That the display shows UE, and what the load was (one heavy item, a few items, a full load).
- That the washer is level, the shipping bolts are out, and whether the washer still shakes with no load.
Spin light blinking vs UE
| Signal | What GE says | Owner step |
|---|---|---|
| Spin or Spin & Rinse light blinking | Out-of-balance load detected; the washer tries to correct it and finish the cycle | Usually none. If the load is wetter than normal at the end, redistribute it and run a Drain & Spin or Spin cycle |
| UE | The laundry load is unbalanced | Redistribute the laundry evenly and make sure the washer is level |
