GE CAnCELEd message: the cycle was paused too long or the washer stopped itself.
IMMEDIATE ACTION
Wait out the 4-minute lockout
Next stepStart the cycle again
Message keeps returning: contact service
THE SHORT ANSWER
GE says CAnCELEd may scroll across the display if the washer was paused for more than 24 hours, or if it stopped itself because of certain errors. As soon as the message scrolls, the washer locks its controls for 4 minutes. Wait it out (unplugging restarts the timer), then start the cycle again. If it keeps happening, contact GE service.
Based on GE Appliances’ Consumer Help Indicator support page for 2017-and-newer electronic-control washers, checked October 10, 2026.
What CAnCELEd means
CAnCELEd is one of five messages on GE’s Consumer Help Indicator page for 2017-and-newer electronic-control washers. GE gives two reasons for it: the cycle was paused for longer than 24 hours, or the washer stopped itself because of certain errors, which the page does not name. On the GE Profile UltraFast Combo washer/dryer, GE’s page uses the wording “Cycle Canceled Draining” for the same situation. GE notes that messages may vary by model, so your owner’s manual is the reference for your exact washer.
How it appears: CAnCELEd scrolling across the display.
What to do, in order
- Wait for the 4-minute lockout. The controls do not respond during it. Unplugging the washer restarts the timer, so leave it plugged in.
- Think about what happened first. If you paused the cycle and came back more than a day later, that is the first reason GE lists, so there is nothing to repair. If you did not pause it, note any other message that appeared before CAnCELEd, because GE says the washer can also stop itself after certain errors.
- Start the cycle again. Do this after the lockout ends.
If CAnCELEd keeps returning
GE says to contact service if the problem persists. Tell them:
- The model number (where to find it).
- That CAnCELEd shows without you having paused the cycle, and any other message you saw just before it.
- That you waited out the 4-minute lockout before restarting.
