CYCLE WON’T FINISH

Washer stuck on spin? Check balance, suds and drain before you reset it.

Check these in order

1. Wait and watch before you reset. Whirlpool lists what changes the estimate: load size and type, cycle and options, water temperature and pressure, and unbalanced-load detection. If the time stays the same near the end, the load may be struggling to balance, which happens with single bulky items such as rugs or bedding.
2. Check for a heated cycle. Sanitize and Steam turn the heater on. Whirlpool says heating time depends on the incoming water temperature and the load, and the display may not change for long periods. Its tip: run hot water in the nearest sink for 30 seconds before starting.
3. Check for suds. Excess suds can trigger Sd, 5d or SUD depending on the model, and the washer adds water or extra rinses to reduce them, which adds time (Whirlpool). Use only HE detergent and measure it; with a bulk dispenser turned on, do not add more detergent to the load. Whirlpool also says “no splash” or “easy pour” chlorine bleach may thicken and create excess suds.
4. Rebalance the load. Pause and spread the load. Whirlpool suggests adding a few towels to counterbalance. Samsung’s ranges are 3 to 5 lb for a small load and 6 to 16 lb for a large one, and it says not to wash floor mats, pillows or dog houses.
5. Check whether it ever drained. Samsung says that if the washer cannot drain, it never moves to the spin step. For front-loaders it recommends cleaning the pump filter about once a month or every 40 washes, and checking the drain hose. See the not-draining guide.
6. Check level, then calibration if your model has it. Samsung lists leveling, and a Calibration Mode on models whose manual covers it: with the drum empty, hold Temp and Delay End for 3 seconds until “Cb”, press Start/Pause, and wait 1 to 3 minutes for En, End or 0. If the tub did not spin during calibration, Samsung says to request service.

If it comes back

If the cycle repeats the same step for a long time with no change in sound, or a code returns, contact the maker’s service. Tell them:

• The brand, model number (where to find it) and the exact display text.
• The cycle and options selected, the load size, and whether water remained in the drum.
• How long it ran in the spin or balance step, and what it sounded like.
