THE SHORT ANSWER
F21 on a Whirlpool front-load washer (also called F02) means the drain time is longer than expected. Whirlpool’s checks: make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged, and use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent. Then press Pause/Cancel, or unplug the washer for 5 minutes, select the cycle again and press Start. If F21 stays, contact Whirlpool service.

What F21 means
Whirlpool’s help pages say F21 and F02 indicate that the washer’s drain times are longer than expected. They name two common causes: a kinked or clogged drain hose, and detergent that is not HE. They do not mention a failed part, so the home fix is these checks and a reset.

Fix it in three steps
- Check the drain hose. Straighten any kink so water can flow freely, and clear any blockage from the hose, the drainpipe or the utility sink. Whirlpool also advises securing the hose with the U-shaped drain hose guide described in your installation instructions.
- Use only HE detergent. Whirlpool says non-HE detergent, or more than the recommended amount, makes excess suds that can cause leaks, drainage problems or poor rinsing.
- Clear the code and try again. Press Pause/Cancel. If the code stays, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in, select the cycle again and press Start.
If F21 comes back
Whirlpool’s page ends with “Still need help? Contact us or schedule service.” Tell them:
- The model number (where to find it).
- That the code is F21 (or F02) and that the drain hose has no kink or clog.
- Which detergent you used and how much, and that you did the reset.
