Whirlpool F5E3 washer code: the door is not locking properly.
IMMEDIATE ACTION
Check nothing is blocking the latch
Next stepUnplug the washer for 5 minutes
Never force the door or the latch
THE SHORT ANSWER
F5E3 means the washer says its door is not locking properly. Make sure the door is fully closed and that nothing, such as clothing or shipping materials, is blocking the latch. Then unplug the washer for 5 minutes to reset the control, and contact service if F5E3 returns.
Based on Whirlpool Product Help for front-load washers, checked October 9, 2026.
What F5E3 means
Whirlpool’s help page for front-load washers says this code “indicates that the door is not locking properly.” It does not list separate causes. It names the things to rule out: the door not fully closed, and something blocking the latch or preventing the door from closing, such as clothing or shipping materials.
How it appears: F5 E3 on the display, also written F5E3 or F5-E3.
Fix it in three steps
- Check the door. Make sure it is fully closed.
- Check the latch. Look for clothing or shipping materials blocking the latch or stopping the door from closing.
- Reset the control. Whirlpool says resetting the control can sometimes solve the problem. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in.
If F5E3 comes back
Whirlpool’s next step is service through the contact and scheduling links on its help page. Do not pry the door or bypass the latch. Tell them:
- The model number (where to find it).
- That the display shows F5 E3 and that you checked the door and latch and did the 5-minute reset.
- Whether the latch makes a sound when the door closes.
F5E1, F5E2 and F5E3 side by side
| Code | Whirlpool’s wording | First thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| F5E1 | Door switch error | Door completely closed; nothing blocking the switch (clothing, shipping materials) |
| F5E2 | Door not locking properly | Door firmly closed and latched; nothing sticking out past the opening |
| F5E3 | Door not locking properly | Nothing blocking the latch (clothing, shipping materials) |
For all three, Whirlpool’s next step after the checks is the same: unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then contact service if the code returns.
