What F5E2 means
Whirlpool’s help page for front-load washers says this code “indicates that the door is not locking properly.” It names two causes: a door that is not latched, and something that stops the door from closing. The door must be completely closed before the washer will run.
How it appears: F5 E2 on the display. People also type F5E2 or F5-E2.
Fix it in three steps
- Close the door firmly. A door can look closed without being latched. Open it, then close it firmly.
- Clear the opening. Look for laundry sticking out past the door opening or caught in the seal. Whirlpool says to leave enough room for clothes to tumble freely, so take items out if the drum is packed.
- Reset the control. Unplug the washer from the outlet and leave it unplugged for 5 minutes, then plug it back in and start a cycle again.
If F5E2 comes back
Whirlpool’s next step is service, using the scheduling and contact links on its help page (linked below). Don’t pry the door or try to bypass the latch. Tell the service team:
- The model number (where to find it) and that the display shows F5 E2.
- That you already re-closed the door, cleared the opening, and did the 5-minute reset.
- Whether the code appears on every start or only sometimes, and whether the latch makes a sound when the door closes.
If the door is stuck shut instead
