THE SHORT ANSWER
IE means water is not getting into the washer properly. Open both faucets fully, straighten the inlet hoses, make sure the drain hose is not sitting too low or underwater, and clean the inlet filters. If IE keeps coming back, LG says to request service.

What IE means
LG’s help pages describe IE (water inlet error) as the washer not filling with water properly. They list these causes:
- The water supply valve is closed or the supply is interrupted.
- An inlet hose is kinked, damaged, or frozen.
- The inlet filter is clogged with debris.
- The drain hose is too low, its end is underwater, or it is pushed too far into the drainpipe, so water can drain out while the washer fills.
How it appears: IE on the display. Some people read it as 1E.
Check in this order
- Open both faucets all the way. Turn each one counterclockwise until it stops. LG says that partly open taps make the fill take longer than expected, which can trigger IE.
- Check the hoses are on the right valves. The cold hose (blue) and the hot hose (orange or red) must be connected to the matching valves.
- Straighten any kink. Pinched or kinked inlet hoses restrict the flow. LG says a damaged hose has to be replaced.
- In cold weather, check for freezing. If a valve or hose is frozen, LG’s front-load page says to wrap it in a warm towel at 122–140°F (50–60°C). Its top-load page says the supply resumes once the temperature rises above freezing.
- Clean the inlet filters. Turn off the faucet and unplug the washer. Unscrew the supply hose counterclockwise and pull the filter out with pliers. Rinse it under running water and scrub off debris, rust, or mineral stains with a toothbrush. Put the filter back and reconnect the hose. Keep a towel ready for drips.
- Check the drain hose. Its end must not be underwater, and it should not go more than 4 inches (10 cm) into the drainpipe, or water can siphon out while the washer fills. Make sure it cannot pop out of its holder, is not installed too high, and has no bends, blockages, or punctures.
If IE comes back
LG’s next step is a repair request or a technician visit. Before you call, note:
- The full model number (where to find it).
- Whether IE appears right away or only after some water has entered.
- Which of the checks above you already did.
Is it normal to get cold water on a hot cycle?
Yes, if the hoses are connected correctly. LG says the washer may mix hot and cold water to protect the laundry and hold the cycle’s target temperature, and it can keep being used.
