THE SHORT ANSWER

LG says an OE code means the washer cannot drain the water used in the wash cycle, and names a kinked drain hose or a clogged drain pump filter as possible causes. Check the hose behind the washer for kinks, then run a spin-only cycle and listen for the pump to hum. If it hums, clean the drain pump filter. If it does not hum, the pump needs a repair.

What OE means

LG’s front-load article says OE means the washer cannot drain the water used in the wash cycle. It names two causes: a kinked drain hose or a clogged drain pump filter. It also says excess suds can form air pockets that the pump cannot clear, which is why it suggests a tub clean cycle and less detergent when the filter is clean.

How it appears: OE on the display. On LG top-load washers OE has a different article; this page follows the front-load one.

Check in this order

Check the drain hose. Look behind the washer for kinks or clogs. If you straighten a kink or clear a clog, run a spin cycle to see whether OE is gone.
Test the drain pump (if the hose is fine). Press POWER, press SPIN SPEED until HIGH is selected, then press START/PAUSE to start a spin-only cycle. During the first 15 seconds you should hear a hum, and possibly water draining. A hum means the drain pump motor is running.
If you heard a hum, clean the drain pump filter. Switch the washer off and unplug it. Open the service panel; on the model LG shows it is at the bottom-left corner, and yours may differ, so check your manual. Unclip the drain hose beside the panel, remove its cap and drain the remaining water into a short pan or bucket; if no water comes out, push the hose back about 1 inch. Put a hand towel under the filter, turn it counter-clockwise and take it out. Clean the filter, its opening and its base with a soft-bristle brush and warm water; LG says not to wash it in a dishwasher. Refit the hose cap and clip the hose back, insert the filter and turn it clockwise until it stops, then close the cover.
Run a tub clean cycle. If you removed debris, run one and see whether OE clears. If the filter was clean, LG says excess suds may have caused air pockets: run a tub clean cycle and use less detergent, then run a new cycle. If OE returns, the washer may need repair.

If there was no hum, or OE comes back

LG says that if you cannot hear the humming, the drain pump is not working properly and needs service, and points to its 24/7 chat support for a repair request. Tell them:

The model number (where to find it).
That the code is OE, whether the pump hummed during the spin-only test, and what the filter looked like.
That the hose has no kink or clog and that you ran a tub clean cycle.
