THE SHORT ANSWER

LG says UE means the load is unbalanced: laundry has piled up on one side of the drum and cannot be spread evenly. Pause the washer, take the laundry out, spread it evenly and choose a spin cycle that suits the load. Keep the drum to about two thirds full, do not machine wash items such as rugs or bathroom mats, and check that the washer is level. If UE continues, request service.

What UE means

LG’s article says UE stands for unbalanced error. It occurs when laundry piles up on one side of the drum so the drum cannot distribute the load evenly. It can also occur when the load is too big or too small. LG lists three causes: laundry not spread evenly (for example from using a laundry net the wrong way), items that are not suitable for machine washing, and a washer that is not level.

Check in this order

Check what is in the drum. LG says not to machine wash bathroom mats, carpets, electric blankets, curtains or rubber mats, which can be damaged, and that waterproof clothes and dolls may damage the washer. For pillows and cushions, remove the stuffing and wash only the cover. Wash blankets on the Duvet cycle with spin speed set to medium, and padded or down jackets on the Sportswear cycle with spin speed set to medium, if your washer has those cycles.
Check the load size. Load the drum to about 2/3 of its capacity.
Spread the laundry out. Pause the washer, take the laundry out, spread it evenly and select a spin cycle suited to the load. If you use laundry nets, pick a net that fits the load and fill it only to 2/3 of its capacity. Do not wash a single net alone: wash two or three nets together with some clothes.
Check that the washer is level. If it shakes or thumps during spin, rock it from the front, back and sides to feel for unevenness. With a wrench, adjust the leg on the side the washer tilts toward, and make sure all legs touch the floor firmly. Put a level on the front of the top plate and then in the middle: it is level when the bubble sits in the middle.

If UE keeps returning

LG says to request service if the issue does not resolve, and links to a repair request page and online chat. Tell them:

The model number (where to find it).
That the code is UE, what the load was, and whether it happens with a small, evenly spread load.
That the washer is level and that you removed items LG says should not be machine washed.
