MAYTAG · CLEAN WASHER REMINDER
Maytag CL washer code: it is a reminder to run Clean Washer, not a fault.
IMMEDIATE ACTION
THE SHORT ANSWER
CL on a Maytag front-load washer is a maintenance reminder, not a fault. Maytag says it appears after 30 cycles as a reminder to run the Clean Washer cycle, and it clears automatically after a Clean Wash cycle is completed or after three cycles.
Based on Maytag Product Help for front-load washers, checked October 10, 2026.
What CL means
Maytag’s help page lists CL under “Other Error Codes” for front-load washers and describes it as a reminder to run the Clean Washer cycle. It does not list specific models or model years, so it covers front-load washers generally.
How it appears: CL on the display. It is a reminder, so the washer is otherwise working.
What to do
- Empty the drum. Take out all laundry. The Clean Washer cycle is run with nothing inside.
- Run the Clean Washer cycle. Maytag’s page calls it the Clean Wash cycle and points to its help article on removing odors from the washer interior for details. Our own cleaning guide covers the routine.
- Optionally use affresh. Maytag lists affresh appliance cleaner as an option and says it cleans parts such as the tub, racks, pump, valves, drain and recirculation hoses. See the washer-cleaner note in recommended tools.
- Or let it clear. Maytag says CL clears on its own after three cycles if you do not run Clean Washer, but the reminder is there to keep the washer clean.
If it looks different
| Message | What it means | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| CL | Reminder to run Clean Washer, shown after 30 cycles (Maytag) | This page |
| rL or F-34 | Items were detected during the Clean Washer cycle (Maytag and Whirlpool) | rL guide |
| F0 E7 | Clothing detected while the washer tried to run Clean Washer | Maytag F0 E7 |
| LoC or LC | The controls are locked and will not respond | Won’t start guide |
If CL keeps returning right after a completed Clean Washer cycle, or a different code appears, Maytag’s page sends you to its service links. Tell service the model number (where to find it), that the display shows CL, and that you completed the cycle.
