THE SHORT ANSWER

SUD or Sd means the washer detected too many suds. It cannot spin water out through the foam, so it pauses tumbling and adds water for extra rinsing until the bubbles break down. Let it finish. To prevent it, use the detergent amount the maker recommends for the soil level and load size, and avoid “no splash” or “easy pour” bleach.

What SUD / Sd means

Maytag’s help page says there are too many suds in the washer and that it cannot spin out water with the excess suds. While the display shows Sud or Sd, the washer extends the rinse time: it pauses tumbling and adds water for extra rinsing so the bubbles can break down. Maytag says this pause and rinsing is necessary and may repeat several times.

What to do right now

Let the washer work. The pauses and extra rinses are the washer clearing the foam. Don’t keep restarting it.
Wipe up anything that spills. Keep the floor around the washer dry.

How to stop it coming back

Check the detergent amount. HE detergents come in concentrations such as 2x, 4x, and 8x. Maytag says to follow the detergent maker’s dosage for the soil level and load size, because too much detergent can lead to longer cycle times, oversudsing, and poor rinsing and cleaning.
Use large pods only for large loads. Maytag says larger pre-measured detergent pacs are meant for big or heavily soiled loads.
Check your bleach. “No splash” or “easy pour” liquid chlorine bleach contains a thickening agent that can create excess suds. If you use bleach, use regular liquid bleach instead.
Run a clean cycle afterwards. Maytag recommends a Clean Wash cycle after the washer finishes, to remove excess detergent and buildup. It also recommends affresh cleaner for the tub, racks, pump, valves, drain, and recirculation hoses.
