Maytag F9 E1: water is leaving too slowly — start outside the cabinet.

F9 E1 is commonly a long-drain code on many Maytag washers. It says the machine did not empty in time. It does not prove a failed pump, and the safest first checks are usually outside the appliance.

Look for the visible restriction

Inspect the drain hose without pulling a heavy washer by yourself. A kink, a crushed hose, or a hose installed incorrectly in a standpipe can slow water enough to trigger a timed error. Do not cut, extend, or tape a drain hose based on a generic video.

Observe one drain attempt

After the visual check, one controlled drain or drain-and-spin attempt can tell you whether water moves. A hum with no movement, standing water, or water backing up elsewhere is useful evidence. Repeated retries are not a repair.

Call when the code returns

Service is the right next step if F9 E1 returns after visible hose checks and any manual-approved filter care, if there is a leak, or if the washer is loud during drain. Save the model number and a photo of the display.
