THE SHORT ANSWER
F9E1 on a Maytag washer means a long drain: the washer is not draining correctly. Check the drain hose first. On a front-load washer it should go no more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe, stay no higher than 96 inches from the bottom of the washer, and not be sealed in with tape. Then check the drain pump filter and the small drain holes in the door seal. On a top-load washer, check the hose is not pushed too far into the standpipe and has no kinks or clogs.

What F9E1 means
Maytag’s front-load page says the code indicates the washer is unable to drain correctly, and lists four things to check. Maytag’s top-load page calls it a long drain and lists two. Maytag gives no reset for the front-load version, so the checks below are the whole owner-side fix.
How it appears: F9 E1 on the display, also written F9E1 or F9-E1. Some top-load washers show DRN.
Front-load washer: check in this order
- Check the drain hose length. The hose should not extend more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe, standpipe or laundry tub; a longer hose can lead to siphoning. The U-shaped hose form from your installation instructions sets the right length. The top of the hose should be no higher than 96 inches from the bottom of the washer.
- Make sure the hose is not taped in. Do not seal the hose into the drainpipe with tape. It should sit snug but loose, leaving a gap so air can break the siphon.
- Clean the drain pump filter (some models). On some models it is behind the bottom dispenser drawer, or inside the storage drawer. A clogged filter drains poorly, so clean it periodically. Follow the cleaning steps linked from the page or in your manual, and expect water.
- Clear the door seal drain holes. Small drain holes inside the door seal (the bellow) can clog and slow draining. Clean them following your manual’s cleaning and maintenance section.
Top-load washer: check in this order
- Check how far the hose goes into the standpipe. It should not be pushed in past the elbow: that can cause siphoning, water draining back into the tub, or slow or no spin. Use the hose in the shape it came in, and do not tape it to the drainpipe.
- Straighten kinks and clear clogs. Straighten any kink in the hose, and clear any blockage from the drainpipe or utility sink.
